IRW’s Dr. Lauren Gould was interviewed by Gina Gambetta for an article in The Independent on the UK Ministry of Defense’s efforts to compensate the innocent victims caused by its airstrikes against ISIS.
Gambetta found that between 2016 and 2021, the UK was more likely to pay Iraqi, Syrian, or Afghan civilians compensation for a road collision than for destroying their homes.
Dr. Gould explains that this passivity does not just have direct negative consequences for the civilians whose damage is left uncompensated, but that the failure to recognize victims causes deep grievances that can feed into new violence.
