David Snetselaar is an Assistant Research Fellow at the Centre for Global Challenges at Utrecht University. Together with Lauren Gould, he is doing research on how various non-governmental actors have sought to monitor the Dutch contribution to the international Anti-IS coalition in Syria and Iraq. The research gives insight into how, despite the remote documentation of acts of violence through new methods of open source investigation, state transparency and accountability remain limited. David studied Cultural Anthropology (2017) and Conflict Studies and Human Rights (2018) at Utrecht University. In 2018 he conducted fieldwork research on the European Forum on Armed Drones, giving insight into how the logic of remote warfare and the use of new weapon technologies challenge existing notions and mechanisms of justice. David is interested in how, much like remote warfare, journalist war reporting, monitoring and archiving acts of violence, and legal prosecution is increasingly being carried out remotely and detached from the actual battlefield.
